On Sunday, September 14, youthful 81-year-old Wallace T. “Wally” Stewart, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, will compete in the 2014 Alcatraz Invitational Swim. This 1.25-mile open-water event, presented by San Francisco’s South End Rowing Club, will begin at a point abeam Alcatraz Island and finish at the South End Rowing Clubhouse at the foot of the Hyde Street Pier. Wally is requesting that people make a donation to the Korean War Memorial Foundation in support of his efforts. He feels that this would be most appropriate because the following day, September 15, is the 64th anniversary of the Marines’ Inchon Landing in 1950, a crucial turning point in the war that will be represented in bronze as part of the Memorial design.

Wally has completed the Alcatraz Invitational Swim five times between 1970 and 1990, and has also swum the Golden Gate four times. He’s back in the water this year because his grandson Tom invited him to make it a family affair. The date also happens to be Tom’s 40th birthday. Wally is a long-time San Francisco resident and former math teacher at Lowell High School.
